Why Do We Need a New Hospital?
At more than 70 years old, CGMH has served our community well, but it was built for a different time and a much smaller population. Today, cracks in walls, uneven floors, low ceilings, and hallways lined with storage reflect the reality of a hospital that has outgrown its space. Some employee offices are located in portable buildings, and departments across the hospital continue to find creative ways to make every square foot count.
Our teams have done an incredible job adapting the current facility and maintaining high-quality care despite these challenges. Their commitment and innovation have helped CGMH continue to serve a rapidly growing region. But the reality is that the building can no longer fully support the way healthcare is delivered today, or how it will be delivered in the future.
The current facility was not designed to meet modern expectations for accessibility, infection prevention and control, patient privacy, digital technology, or the growing demand for services in South Georgian Bay. As our community grows and healthcare continues to evolve, simply patching and renovating existing spaces is no longer enough.
Tomorrow’s Hospital is an opportunity to create a facility designed around the contemporary needs of patients, families, staff, physicians, and volunteers, with the flexibility, capacity, and technology to support outstanding care for generations to come. Our future hospital will provide expanded clinical services, modern infrastructure, improved accessibility, enhanced infection prevention and control measures, and space to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our region.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hospital development projects are complex and we understand there may be questions in the community related to our project. Below are the most frequently asked questions we’ve received about our hospital development project.
It is too early to confirm an opening date for the new hospital. Based on current planning assumptions, the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and Request for Proposals (RFP) milestones are anticipated in 2027, with contract award and construction start anticipated for early 2029. At present, CGMH has successfully met all project milestones and requirements, and the project remains on schedule.
Hospitals are among the most complex architectural and engineering projects to design and construct. The Ontario Government oversees a rigorous multi-stage capital planning process for all hospital projects involving numerous phases of planning, design and procurement; each stage requires Ministry approval. As with all hospital redevelopment projects, dates continue to be subject to change and further government approvals.
The new hospital will include up to 132 beds, with space to build more in the future. It is being planned to ensure future generations can access the care they need, with the capacity and flexibility to evolve alongside the growing community. This includes room for future growth, adaptable clinical spaces, and infrastructure that can support new ways of delivering care.
The new hospital will introduce inpatient rehabilitation services will help people regain strength, restore independence, and return home safely, closer to family and support networks.
Plans are also underway for a dedicated chemotherapy clinic that will help bring expanded cancer care closer to home and allow more people to receive treatment in their own community.
The new hospital will include an expanded Emergency Department, enhanced surgical and recovery care, greater access to clinics, outpatient programs, and specialized services, improved perinatal and newborn care, increased diagnostic imaging capacity, and a dedicated Learning Centre for healthcare education and training.
Future use of the current CGMH site has not yet been determined. Decisions about the current hospital site will be made carefully, with community needs at the centre.
